NotesJohn Reid Murray was born in Helensburgh. He studied at Glasgow before going to Antwerp Academy with E A Hornel. A landscape painter his work is distinguished by the frequent use of heavy impasto with a fine feel for seasonal color often with extensive foregrounding and low horizon. He exhibited with The Glasgow Boys in Europe and won a gold medal in Munich in 1897. Murray died in Prestwic in 1906 before his full potential was realized. He is represented in The Glasgow Art Gallery. Exhibited Royal Scottish Academy 45, Royal Academy 1, Royal Hibernian Society 7, Glasgow Institute 50, Liverpool 2.
