NotesPaul Ponce Antoine Robert, known as Robert de Séry was a French painter and aquafortist.
Born in January 1686 in Séry (qualified from Sery-en-Porcien in the death certificate), Paul Ponce Antoine Robert was the son of a couple living in this village: his father, Louis Robert, was a merchant-drapier, married to Françoise Bernier. In 1698, his father died, and his mother found herself with six dependent children. Shortly thereafter, he went to Reims to study drawing and painting with an artist named Jean Tisserand and working for the Remoises churches. The rudiments acquired, he went to Paris, where he was a pupil of Jean Jouvenet and then Pierre-Jacques Cazes.
He then went to Rome, Italy. Placed under the protection of the Cardinal of Rohan, he returned to Paris around 1725 with his protector. He was housed in what would become the newly built Hotel de Rohan. He gives lessons in his apartment and also opens a drawing school for young girls. He placed Madeleine Basseporte, of which he was one of the teachers, at the direction of this drawing school, located Old Street of the Temple.
He died in Paris in December 1733. He was buried in the Église des Capucins-du-Marais in Paris
