NotesBritish artist Henry LeJeune was born in London in 1820. Following the lead of generations before him, he studied at Sir Joshua Reynolds's famous Royal Academy and later became an associate of the same institution in 1863. Following more traditional, idealizing styles of European art, LeJeune created historical genre scenes as well as vignettes of Biblical stories. LeJeune was noted for his sentimental portraits of children, which he successfully sold during his lifetime. In addition to his financial success, LeJeune was welcomed to exhibit works at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Royal Society of British Artists.
