NotesHerbert Royle was born in Manchester in 1870 and studied art under John William Buxton Knight (1843-1908). He lived firstly in Southport, later moving to Bolton Abbey, Yorkshire and subsequently to Nessfield, near Ilkley. Royle exhibited annually at the Royal Academy from 1894 for almost fifty years, and from 1900 at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Glasgow Institute and at the Royal Society of Painters in Oils. Each year he holidayed in the Scottish Highlands and during these trips painted many Scottish loch and harbour views. He often painted en plein air and travelled by bicycle seeking subjects to paint, with his easel strapped to his bicycle and with a hot potato in his pocket in winter to warm his hands.
