NotesMax Avadiyevich Birshtein was a Russian artist born in Kiev in 1914. He studied at the Surikov Moscow State Institute of Arts and was influenced by R.R. Falk. Birshtein was known for his portraits, landscapes, still-life, and genre-painting, particularly those depicting the Russian North. He won several awards throughout his career, including the Prize of All-Union Concourse by the USSR Artists’ Association “My Contemporary” in 1972 and the Golden Medal of the Russia Art Academy in 1990. Birshtein's works are held in many private collections. He passed away in Tarussa in 2000.
