Etching over heliogravure by Charles Amand-Durand (1831-1905) of the 1635 etching, ca. 1875, printed on antique, felt-finish, cream laid paper with a van Gelder watermark (Heawood 1365), with the Amand-Durand red ink stamp on verso. NotesCharles Amand-Durand (1831-1905), a French reproductive artist made beautiful facsimile etchings of noted etchers through the photogravure process he called heliogravure. Amand-Durand would transfer an image photographically to a copper plate using an underexposed direct heliogravure process, he would then examine the original print of the same subject from a prominent collection and enhance the photogravure by overlay etching and/or drypoint to match the original he had at hand. Since he was able to borrow the very best existing prints from various museums, the final product was always of the highest quality. Each etching was inked, wiped and printed by hand to reproduce the original.
These heliogravures were, and are, so good that there are many framed images that have been passed off as originals - many were in museum collections until the 1940s. In many cases, distinguishing copy from original can only be done by connoisseurs or by examining the paper on which they were printed. Each Amand-Durand heliogravure has an Amand-Durand stamp on the verso, sometimes these were removed by unscrupulous dealers and print sellers and sold as originals.
