Vietnamese “so’n mài” lacquer vase, black lacquer over turned wood, with mother of pearl, eggshell, and gold leaf inlay in a stylized leaf design, signed on the bottom and with the workshop seal.
NotesIn Vietnam, lacquer ware is called “so'n mài” and was revitalized at the Ecole des Beaux Arts established under French colonial rule in the early 20th century in Hanoi. Famous Vietnamese artists quickly took to the medium, elevating the craft into fine art, and introducing other decorative materials into their works including sand, crushed eggshell and gold and tin leaf to produce a metallic effect. This remarkable piece is from a Saigon workshop operating in the early 20th century.
